Computational Morphology by Lexical Rules

چکیده

In this paper we outline a lexical organization for Turkish that makes use of lexical rules for innections, derivations, and lexical category changes to control the proliferation of lexical entries. Lexical rules handle changes in grammatical roles, enforce type constraints, and control the mapping of subcategorization frames in valency-changing operations. A lexical inheritance hierarchy facilitates the enforcement of type constraints. The resulting grammar architecture has morphology embedded in the lexicon. The design has been tested as part of an HPSG grammar for Turk-ish. Rebracketing in compounds and phrasal scope in aaxation present formidable diiculties for lexical rules. In terms of performance, run-time execution of the rules seems to be a far better alternative than precompilation. The latter causes exponential growth in the lexicon due to intensive use of innections and derivations in Turkish.

Multi-Tiered Nonlinear Morphology Using Multi-Tape Finite Automata: A Case Study on Syriac and Arabic

This paper presents a computational model for nonlinear morphology with illustrations from Syriac and Arabic. The model is a multitiered one in that it allows for multiple lexical representations corresponding to the multiple tiers of autosegmental phonology. The model consists of three main components: (i) a lexicon, which is made of sublexica, with each sublexicon representing lexical materia...

Representing Lexical Knowledge for Bulgarian Inflectional Morphology in DATR

The paper analyses the application of DATR language for lexical knowledge presentation for interpreting Bulgarian inflectional morphology. It discuss the semantic network of the feature of definiteness in Bulgarian language and compares the lexical knowledge representation for the different part-of-speech with respect to the defined grammar rules, the sound alternations, the related formal pres...

Automatic morphological analysis of Basque

1 I n t r o d u c t i o n The two-level model of computational morphology was proposed by Koskenniemi (1983) and has found widespread acceptance due mostly to its general applicability, declarativeness of rules and clear separation of linguistic knowledge and program. The essential difference from generative phonology is that there are no intermediate states between lexical and surface represen...

A Computational Treatment of Lexical Rules in HPSG as Covariation in Lexical Entries

This paper proposes a new computational treatment of lexical rules as used in the HPSG framework. A compiler is described which translates a set of lexical rules and their interaction into a definite clause encoding, which is called by the base lexical entries in the lexicon. This way, the disjunctive possibilities arising from lexical rule application are encoded as systematic covariation in t...

Arabic Computational Morphology in the West

This paper presents an overview of research on computational Arabic morphology which is done in the West, as well as a new multi-tape model which consits of three components: A lexical component which mapps the autoseg-mental morphemes of Arabic (e.g., pattern , root and vocalism in stems) to a surface form. A rewrite-rules component takes care of conditional changes. A morphotactic component p...
